Pure Breeds
These are traditional, naturally occurring breeds of poultry. They’re bred to maintain consistent traits over generations, such as size, egg production, temperament, and appearance. These chickens are usually recognized by major poultry associations and are often used for showing and breeding.
Characteristics of Pure Breeds:
Cuckoo Marans
- uses: Utility. Dark egg-laying sex-linked hybrid production.
- origin: Marans, France.
- eggs: 160 – 210 Dark Brown.
- weight: Cock: 3.6 Kg. Hen: 3.2Kg. Bantam Cock: 500 – 550g, Hen: 400 – 450g.
- Colours: Black, Dark Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, Silver Cuckoo (Standardised), Black-Tailed Buff, Brown Red (Copper Black), Copper Blue, Silver Black (Birchen), White, Wheaten, and Columbian (Ermine) (non-standardised).
- Useful To Know: Cuckoo Marans hens can be mated with an unbarred cock to produce sex-linked hybrid offspring.

- Colours: Black, Laced Blue, Buff, Cuckoo, Ermine, Salmon, White (Standardised UK).
- Useful To Know: The name Faverolles comes from a village name in France. This means there is always an ‘s’ on the end of the spelling, even if we are talking about a single Faverolle’s chicken, much like the Marans
Houdan
- uses: Originally dual purpose utility. Now exhibition.
- origin: Houdan, France.
- eggs: 180 – 240 white.
- weight: Cock: 3.2 – 3.6Kg, Hen: 2.7 – 3.2Kg Bantam Cock: 680 – 790g, Hen: 620 – 740g.
- Colours: Green-Black with white mottles (Standardised UK) White, Cuckoo
- Useful To Know: The Houdan has five toes. Males have a V shaped comb. An excellent table bird and one of the oldest French breeds.
Palomino Vorwerk
- uses: Attractive, economical utility birds. Origin: Hamburg, Germany.

- Colours: White head, hackles and tail. Gold body and wings.
- Useful To Know: Vorwerks are alert and active and generally docile, suitable for novices. They can fly reasonably well. Quick to mature and economical with food if allowed to forage, spare males can be used as a more ‘traditional’ table bird.
Vorwerk
- uses: Attractive, economical utility birds.

- uses: Rare breed. Utility – Layer.

- Colours: Black and White.
- Useful To Know: A rare breed that is more popular in Germany and The Netherlands where they are called Lakenfelder with an ‘f’ and have slightly different standards to the UK and North America
Brahamas
- uses: Exhibition / Ornamental.
- origin: China.
- eggs: 120-180.
- weight: Cock: 4.55 – 5.45Kg, Hen: 3.2 – 4.10Kg. Bantam: Cock: 1080g, Hen: 910g.
- Colours: Dark, Light, White, Gold, Blue Partridge, Buff Columbian.
- Useful To Know: Indoor housing is often used by exhibitors during bad weather to avoid feathers on feet from being broken. Dark versions require double mating (using separate cock and hen breeders) to obtain the best markings
Orpington’s
- uses: Exhibition / Ornamental.
- origin: Orpington, Kent, England
- eggs: 150 - 200 Brown
- weight: Cock: 3.6 – 4.6Kg, Hen: 3.2 – 4.10Kg. Bantam: Cock: 1.5kg, Hen: 800g.
- Colours: Buff, Lavender, Blue / Black Splash, Chocolate, Jubilee, White, Gold, Blue Partridge, Buff Columbian.
- Useful To Know: The Orpington is a British breed of chicken. It was bred in the late nineteenth century by William Cook of Orpington, at that time in Kent in south-east England. It was intended to be a dual-purpose breed, to be reared both for eggs and for meat, but soon became exclusively a show bird.
Rhode Island Red
- uses: Utility – eggs.
- origin: Rhode Island State, USA.
- eggs: 250+ light brown eggs per year
- weight: Cock: 3.85 Kg. Hen: 2.95 Kg. Bantam Cock: 790 – 910 g. Hen: 680 – 790g.
- Colours: Dark Red almost Mahogany. A Rhode Island White does exist but is not well-known.
- Useful To Know: Rhode Island Reds are a prolific layer of light brown eggs. The Rhode Island Red has been used extensively over the years to create many of the commercial hybrid layers we see today.
Welsummer
- uses: Dual purpose utility – meat and eggs.
- origin: Welsum, Holland.
- eggs: 200 – 250 red-brown.
- weight: Cock: 3.2 Kg.Hen: 2.7 Kg. Bantam Cock: 1.02 Kg, Hen: 790 g.
- Colours: Red-Partridge, Silver Duckwing (Standardised UK), Silver, Golden (both rare and only exist in Germany).
- Useful To Know: UK Standard has not been revised since 1932. Some details are not achievable, such as ‘upright’. The back should be long and flat, almost horizontal.
Sebright
- uses: Exhibition / Ornamental.
- origin: England.
- eggs: 50 – 80 white.
- weight: Cock: 620 g. Hen: 510 g.
- Colours: Gold, Silver. (Standardised UK).
- Useful To Know: A true Bantam, one of the oldest British varieties. Difficult to raise and are highly susceptible to Marek’s disease. Some strains suffer with low fertility. All feathers are required to have black lacing, look out for black peppering on the central background colour.
Ayam Cemani
- uses: Exhibition / Ornamental.
- origin: Indonesia
- eggs: 80 white.
- weight: Cock: 4.4 - 5.5kg Hen: 3.3 - 4.4 kg
- Colours: Black
- Useful To Know: The Ayam Cemani is a rare breed of chicken from Indonesia. They have a dominant gene that causes hyperpigmentation, making the chicken mostly black, including feathers, beak, and internal organs
Barbu D’uccle
- uses: Exhibition.
- origin: Belgium.
- eggs: 200 – 250 tinted / brown.
- weight: Cock: 680-790g max, Hen: 570-680g max.
- Colours: Many colour varieties. The main ones are Porcelain, Millefleur Quail, Blue Quail, Silver Quail, Lavender Quail, Cuckoo, Black, Black Mottled, Blue, Lavender and White.
- Useful To Know: A true bantam, so they have no large counterpart. Whilst not always difficult to keep or rear, varieties with feathered feet must be kept mud free which means covered runs and regular cleaning is usually required, especially during the winter months
Rumpless Araucana
- uses: Coloured Egg Layer / Exhibition.
- origin: Chile / South America.
- eggs: 170-180 Blue / Green.
- weight: Cock: 2.7Kg, Hen: 2.25Kg. Cock: 910g, Hen: 790g.
- Colours: Black, Black-Red, Blue, Blue-Red, Creole, Cuckoo, Golden Duckwing, Lavender, Pile, Silver Duckwing, Spangled, White (Standardised).
- Useful To Know: What we call Rumpless Araucanas are called ‘Araucanas’ in America. To confuse matters further, what the British call Araucana‘s are called ‘Americaunas’ in the Americas. When crossed with any other breed, the offspring will lay a green/blue egg.
Padovana
- uses: Egg Layer / Exhibition.
- origin: Padova / Northern Italy
- eggs: 120 - 150 Cream / Light Brown
- weight: Cock: 1.8 - 2.3Kg, Hen: 1.5 - 2Kg.
- Colours: Gold, Silver, Ginger, Black, White, Lavender
- Useful To Know: For centuries, the Padovana chicken was bred mostly for ornamental reasons due to its striking appearance. The chicken’s large crest is beautiful and also functional; the crest acts as an insulator, which allows the Padovana chicken to resist colder temperatures better than other chickens and, as a result, produce more eggs during the winter.

Silkies

- origin: Asia, most believe China or Japan while others favour India.

- Colours: Black, Chocolate, Blue, Buff, Partridge, Splash, White, Lavender, Paint and Porcelain.
- Useful To Know: The Silkie is a Chinese breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk and satin. The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens have only four.

- Useful To Know: The Speckledy is a modern hybrid and comes from a Rhode Island Red crossed with a Maran. The feathering closely resembles that of a Maran but it is a far more prolific egg layer. The Speckledy is a docile, easily handled bird
Sussex

Emerald White

- Useful To Know: This breed will be very inquisitive and friendly; however, they can seem a little aloof as they do not like being handled too much and will be self-sufficient, they prefer to do their own thing
Bluebells

- Colours: Dark Grey / Blue and some can either have Gold or dark coloured neck feathers.
- Useful To Know: The Beechwood Blue Chicken, also known as a Bluebell Chicken is and is similar looking to the Copper Blue Maran, very gentle birds
Black rock
